| Flat-Screen Television One of the newest innovations in the electronic industry is flat-screen television. It is now possible to have television sets of almost any picture size that are only three to five inches in depth. It is highly likely that flat-screen TV will replace picture-tube sets in the next few years, just as DVDs have been replacing VCRs for video watching. The two most common types of flat panel television are LCD (liquid crystal display) and plasma. LCD was first used for watch faces, and they are the screens found in laptop computers. The smaller sizes of flat-screen television, from 5 to 37 inches, tend to be the LCD version. The larger ones, from 42 to 63 inches, are usually plasmas. With the newer sets, custom design and concealment into custom cabinetry is getting easier. There even are flip-down television sets for under-cabinet locations in kitchens and bathrooms. Plasma TVs You may have heard that plasma television does not work above 7000 feet, but there are a few models designed specifically for mountain use (see High-Altitude Plasma TVs). |
